The Hui nationality has a population of nearly 500,000 scattered throughout Yunan, plus several other areas where they are concentrated.   They tend to live in compact communities.

The Hui people practice Islam, using some of the Arabic language for their religious activities.   They celebrate the birthday of Mohammed, the founder of Islam Religion.   Their primary language is now Mandarin, but many things are written in both forms.   Their homes and clothes these days resemble the Han nationality.

Minority acceptance has vastly improved throughout China in recent years, with this group being praised as the one that has blended into Chinese culture the best.   But this group was as recently as last Fall involved in racial conflict in Hunan Province, the birthplace of Mao, where several hundred were said to have been killed by the authorities.
