The Tatar are a name that most westerners recognize, although we pronounce it Tartar. These people live in the northern reaches of China and into Siberia and terrorized the world along with Ghenghis Khan, the Mongul ruler. They are said to have origins along the Volga River. Today they are primarily Muslim, although the first contact with the west was a missionary effort by Friar William of Rubruck, sent by the French in 1200, before Marco Polo. There is little written about the role of females, but they too fought with their men in battle. National Geographic has done a good deal of work trying to better understand the success of these nomads and has published several articles about them in recent years. Next Picture |
