The Oroqen are found in Xinjiang Province, near the Russian border in northwest China.   The Oroqen are one of the smaller minority groups in China, with a population of 3-7000.   Originally, they were nomads, living in tents, following their herds of sheep as they searched for good grasslands. Today most of the Oroqen live in permanent housing, built by the central authorities from which they tend to their flocks and farm the land.   One translation of the name means literally “people using reindeer,” a name they gave themselves.    Historically, they have moved south as Northern peoples invaded China. They worship nature and believe everything has a spirit.   They are very superstitious and believe in both devils and ghosts.   The bear has a special place in their culture. Winter dress is primarily animal skins as they live in a mountainous and very cold habitat. Next Picture
