Nearly 250,000 Naxi people live in a small area in Yunan Province in southwestern China. Lijiang, the center for the Naxi, is today a UN Cultural Heritage site and a wonderful place to visit. The Naxi are a matriarchal society, wherein the women are in total charge. There is no marriage as we know the term. Men in this culture are not allowed to spend an entire night with a woman; they are invited to a home, but must be gone by daylight. Women do all the farm work, including heavy lifting; men work minor jobs in the towns or as hired out workers. The Naxi are know historically for being very warlike and have only recently been brought under true control of the central authorities. Until the 1940’s, they considered themselves and independent entity. The Naxi believe in Shamanism; they have one of the world’s most primitive written languages and their own music. Next Picture |
