The Pumi are another of the smaller ethnic groups living in Yunan Province. There are approximately 20,000-30,000 today. They originally were nomads, but have settled down in this remote area. When Grace and I visited Lijiang, a UN Cultural City in 2000, they were proud of their electricity (first light bulb in 1975 +/-), their roads (first truck in 1945), and their independence. They live in harmony with the Naxi, the dominant group in this area who used to be vicious warriors to the extent that the Naxi men were often recruited as mercenaries by others. That may help explain the matriarchal arrangement of that group. The Pumi are animists, worshiping nature and their ancestors. One of the favorite foods of the Pumi is salted pork wrapped in pork skin. Next Picture |
